Chapter 1-3
In chapter 1, we met Nick Carraway, our narrator. The story is told in one big flashback. Nick has returned to the Mid-west and is telling about what happened to him during the summer of 1922 in New York City. After he graduates from Yale and returns from fighting World War 1, he moves to New York City to pursue a career in the bond business. Nick rents a small house on West Egg and has dinner at Tom and Daisy Buchanan's home on East Egg, where meets Jordan Baker. In Chapter 2, Nick goes with Tom to pick up Myrtle, his "other woman." Myrtle is married to George Wilson, a garage owner who lives in the Valley of Ashes, halfway between Manhattan and West Egg. They go to Tom's apartment in Manhattan and have a party that ends with Tom hitting Myrtle. In Chapter 3, Nick gets invited to attend Gatsby's party. Gatsby happens to be Nick's neighbor. He holds wild and crazy parties every weekend. Nick runs into Jordan. He also meets Gatsby, who invites him to go out the next day in his hydroplane.
